None of this “economic stimulus” money can be used to hire permanent employees, he pointed out. “It is very short term. It must be spent by the end of this fiscal year (Sept. 30). The outlook for future years is still uncertain,” Supt. Wade said.
Public information officer Sandy Rives said that several programs are underway to provide summer jobs in the Park for youth within the area. Doris Lackey of Syria has put together a proposal to hire 20 youth for eight weeks in a Youth Conservation Program. The Park Service would supervise the program and provide the overall guidance, he said. “There is also another summer youth program, again with about 20 individuals, in Page County,” he said.
The Park itself, will coordinate and run its own Youth Conservation Corps for about 10 - 12 individuals, he said. That program is funded by the National Park Service, he said. It will be a non-resident program for youth 16 - 18 who live near enough to the Park to commute daily, he added.
