The Virginia Piedmont Guitarists Tour will bring its special concert and media presentation of five traditional African-American guitarists (and one harmonica player) to Washington on Saturday, April 7.
The 7:30 p.m. program at The Theatre is locally sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community. " The Tour showcases an outstanding group of blues, pre-blues, and gospel guitarists from Virginia, all of whom are recognized the world over as masters of the Piedmont Guitar tradition.
Produced by the Virginia Folklife Program (a service of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities), the Tour will perform at 10 sites throughout the state, supported by grants from the Folk Arts Program of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ruth Mott Pund.
The Piedmont Guitarists Tour is an innovative mixed-media event designed to inform as well as entertain. It combines live performances on stage with brief video-documenta ries about the Piedmont Guitar tradition and about each artist, which are projected onto a ten-foot wide screen using a video-projection system.
The guitarists featured in this tour are among the finest performers nationwide in this historically important African-American tradition. All are authentic folk musicians, which is to say that they learned their music from other traditional musicians in their families and in the rural communities where they were raised.
Two of the featured guitarists — John Jackson, of Fairfax, and John Cephas, of Bowling Green — have each received the Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, an awared honoring America’s finest traditional artists for keeping the nation’s divere cultural heritage alive. .
