Jennifer Tomeden, 19, a former student at Rappahannock High School won first place at the National Debate Tournament held at Mary Washington March 12-14.
The American Debate Association (ADA) has over 120 colleges and universities participating. Harvard and Dartmouth are just a few participating. George Mason is currently ranked number two in the United States with Boston College preceding. There are between six and eight debates at each tournament. Four people participate in a single debate, two from each school. Usually about 15 schools participate depending on the tournament and school. Debates include a negative team and an affirmative team.
The topic this year was: The United States should substanially change its development assistance policies toward the following nations: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India.
Some of the areas debated about with in the topic countries include: Women in Development, Aids, Maternal Health Care, De-Mining Afghanistan, Human Rights issues, Global Wanning and banning The Pressler Amendment.
Debate includes researching constantly to stay on top of the issues. There are thousands of pages of research that goes along with each topic every year. George Mason currently has six coaches which is many more than most schools have.
