Bus safety
rule ignored

In January of this year the Rappahannock County Schools formed a quality improvement team to address the problem of school bus safety. Between Sept. 1, 1992 and Jan. 1, 1993 more than eight motorists passed our school buses while they were stopped to load or unload students.
Last year, a child almost got hit by a motorist who did not stop for a bus while it was unloading Alert action by our school bus driver prevented a terrible accident in that case.
Area residents are asked to please drive with caution and stop when they see a bus stopped to pick up or let off children. The bus safety committee decided that the best solution was to have bus drivers call in by bus radio to the School Board office to report license numbers and descriptions of vehicles that violate the law dealing with passing buses stopped to load or unload students. The School Board office will then immediatley notify the Sheriff’s Office. If there is sufficient evidence, violators will be charged.
