Mr. Moore said the most frequenty complaint was from people concerned that snow plows blocked their driveways when they pushed snow. “These citizen concerns are normal,” he said. “People are not used to being stuck in their houses, especially with the sun out.”
He compared the storm with one in 1983 and said that each time the department faces such a storm they evaluate their work to determine how they might do better next time. , Ron Makela, of Amissville, had several suggestions. At the evening session he presented the supervisors with a petition signed by about 148 citizens expressing concern with the snow removel.
The petition said the signers “appreciated the initial efforts” but felt “a lack of concern in regards to the timely opening of the majority of the county’s back roads.” It said this “compromised fire and rescue” efforts and “placed county residents in an extremely hazardous position in regards to their services.” The petition suggested the supervisors determine how to avoid such a problem in the future.
Mr. Makela, in presenting' the petition, specifically complained because crossovers on U.S. 211 weren’t plowed in Rappahannock County until Tuesday. He said they were plowed in Fauquier County on Sunday. He also mentioned several places where drifts were opened only one lane wide, especially places on hills. He said that Route 642 developed three ruts, making passing difficult since cars traveling in both directions were using the same middle rut.
