Waverly Farm’s recently gelded Peace of the Rock, a Virginia-bred 8year-old son of Rock Talk, took the open hurdle with nder Andy Wilson by 15 lengths fi uni Kool Mars.
“Leigh [Louria, the trainer] said just to relax him,” related Wilson following his easiest of wire-to-wire victories. “With the tack change of adding a shadow roll, Peace of the Rock runs very relaxed. ”
Owner-rider Jill Waterman drove her Abacus home to a second season score in the divisional hurdle race. Now leading the spring series, Waterman hit the front half-way through the two-mile contest, and retained a two-length lead over Chinn’s Crossing to the wire.
“I knew that he’s not really a front runner,” said the 18-year-old Dickinson College student. “I was pleased with him not looking around or anything.”
The overstuffed maiden hurdle race split into three divisions of nine runners each. Winner of the first division was Brooks Durkee on his Coman Tan. “My patience with his temperamental nature has been, finally, rewarded,” said the Monkton, Md. horseman. The former flat runner galloped home by eight lengths in the fastest maiden time of 3:21.
The second section was won by Thomas DiZerega’s Gilded Gift, ridden by Joe Walsh. Wolver Hill Farm’s Mount Sinai, trained by former Old Dominion Hounds whipperin Charlie Cornwell, took the final maiden with Mike Elmore.
