In an effort to better control Virginia’s white-tail deer population, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has proposed several changes in state regulations for the next two seasons, including:
• A one-week extension of the special muzzleloader season, which is tentatively set for Oct. 30 through Nov. 11. The muzzleloader season was a week long last year.
• A bag limit of two deer per day and three per year during seasons for general firearms, muzzleloaders and archery.
• Expansion of the bonus permit system for use statewide on private lands, to help take hunting pressures off public land.
The game department’s plans for the next two hunting seasons were disclosed at a public hearing last week in Richmond. That session follow's a number of regional public hearings, including one in Fairfax which attracted a large number of hunters with connections to Rappahannock and Fauquier counties.
