John Jackson, a native of Rappahannock County, has toured the world playing his unique repertory of rags, blues, and country breakdowns. Turner and Lynn Foddrell, from Patrick County, have recently performed their regional- version of the Piedmont blues at Carnegie Hall.
And 84-year-old guitarist Daniel Womack, of Roanoke, specializes in the performance of spirituals and early gospel songs he learned growing up in Pittsylvania County.
Though their music is rooted in a shared cultural heritage once common to many communities of the rural south, each guitarist has a distinctive style and repertory —expressing his individual personality as well as regional differences within the tradition.
The Piedmont guitar style, distinguished by its sophisticated finger-picking technique, was once widely heard as dance music and as accompaniment for sacred songs, love songs, ballads and blues throughout the Southeastern U.S.
Using this characteristic fingerpicking technique, in which the thumb lays down a rhythmic bassline against which one or two fingers pluck out the melody of the tune, the Piedmont guitarist makes a single guitar do the work of several instruments. This technique is related to earlier traditional black banjo styles, which in turn derive from the music of West African lutes.
The Virginia Piedmont Guitarists Tour offers a rare opportunity to see these traditional Virginia guitarists together, and its unique multimedia format will illuminate the rich cultural significance of the tradition.
Admission for Saturday evening’s performance is $5.
