Makela that suggested that Route 642 should be classified as a “primary secondary” road and be scheduled for plowing before other roads.
Mr. Moore said, “Comments like these are helpful. They make us look at what we’re doing.” He said that VDOT guidelines call for opening all roads within 48 hours after the drifting stops, and that the department met those guidelines.
In most storms the roads are cleared ahead of that schedule, he said. “For the last several years we have had no storms like this,” he added.
On widening and paving gravel roads, there were not many comments. Most people asked about the status of projects already scheduled for the rest of this year and next year.
Several people asked about the status of the road and bridge on Route 683, the back road to the county library.
Mr. Moore said that the bridge is deteriorating and will have to have a lower load limit. He said the department will do a study of the amount of traffic on the road. Replacing the bridge, probably with a box culvert would cost about $300,000, he said.
The annual budget for road improvements is about $560,000. Mr. Moore said VDOT will schedule an informational meeting after the study is done to see if county people would want to have such a large portion of an annual budget spent on this project.
Library Board Chairman William Young asked if the bridge could be kept open for foot and bicycle traffic even if it is closed to cars.
