Henry, who last accepted a rider’s trophy here with Ten Bar in 1990, was delighted with Made Up’s efforts. “I got this horse 10 years ago, as a 3-year-old,” he said.
“Made Up won about 12 races on the flat, and placed in 18 or so,” Henry added. “I tried him as a show jumper, but he was a little hot for that. He seems to like his new job — he’s real honest, lots of heart.”
The winner lent an air of confusion to the series as three of the year-end leaders now share a common bond. Henry Wood, Yves Henry and Thanks Henry the horse each have won their share of points in the owner-rider division.
The ladies’ timber series was a showcase for Old Dominion subscribers Mr. and Mrs. V.R. Shackleford and rider Dawn Dugan. The Shacklefords’ Patagonico loped to an unchallenged, eight-length win.
“He was jewel to ride,” Dugan said afterwards. “Today he was good, not too strong — subdued and settled when he hit a nice lick.
“He jumped pretty darn good too. He stood way back and flew a few. It was nice to bring the whole thing together — the Shacklefords and me being ODH members.”
