Following that public hearing the supervisors will begin work on the county’s budget for next year. The budget schedule calls for approval of the school budget at the board’s May 3 meeting.
The supervisors wanted to know how competitive Rappahannock teachers’ salaries will be under the proposed budget.
Dr. Gangel said that the county had slipped some in the last two years. At one point the starting salary had moved up to about 60th in the state, he said. Now it is about 90th, and Dr. Gangel said he thinks it will be about the same next year.
Mr. McCarthy noted that the county has had about the same “effective” tax rate for the past three years. “That cannot continue,” he said. “There will have to be a tax increase .... The sooner the public understands that, the better. ”
The supervisors approved a resolution requesting that VDOT take a section of the old U.S. 211 turnpike to the Whetzel property into the road system.
