Rives added that the Park was asked to se^ up a very large residential camp for about 100 kids like the old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but just did not have the time to put it together.
“Not to mention where would we have put it,” added Supt. Wade.
The Park’s own Youth Program aready has its quota of applicants. “If you know someone who wants to work in the park next year tell them tel come see us in January,” Mr. Rives said.
Both men worked to ease concerns about a bill now before Congress (S204) that would transfer title of some Park Land to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). ■
‘These are state roads that border or cross a section of the Park but have always been maintained by VDOT,” Rives said. Several of th(> roads in question, especially in Rockingham County need to be improved and widened right now. ' -k
The problem is that Federal law prohibits the Park from donating any land or additional rightof-way to VDOT. The only Way for VDOT to atquire the right-of-way to to exchange land of equal value with the Park. «•
To that end VDOT has purchased a tract of about 100 acres in Greene County for the express purpose of exchanging land with the park to gain clear title to the rights-of-way on short sections of 14 roads in seven counties. None is in Rappahar?nock County and only one is in Madison. %
The piece of road in Madison is a section Of Route 600 that passes the bottom of the White Oak Canyon Trail and then climbs toward the back side of Old Rag. The upper end of that roail is extremely narrow but it can not be widened without obtaining additional right-of-way from the Park.
Sendat Bill 204 would allow the Secretary of the Interior to transfer right and title to the specified sections of roadway to VDOT without any consideration or reimbursement. VDOT, how'ever, does not want to wait for this bill to wind its slow course through Congress and has continued to pursue the land swap.
