At the “Academy Awards of Food,” The Ion at Little Washington brought home an Oscar.

Honored as the nation’s best restaurant by the James Beard Awards, owners Patrick O’Connell and Reinhardt Lynch accepted the accolade at a ceremony Monday evening at New York City’s Marriott Marquis.

“It was a complete surprise,” chef O’Connell said. The five nominees, he -added, “are absolutely the finest restaurants in the country. We never thought we’d receive such an honor.”

The Inn bested famed New York restaurants Le Cirque and the Four Seasons, the Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, and Cafe Annie in Houston for the prestigious honor.

The awards are named for the late James Beard, one of the giants of the culinary world and a pioneer of what came to be known as the “New American Cuisine.” Beard stressed the use of fresh ingredients, light sauces and introduced the barbecue grill to the rarified atmosphere of fine dining.

The James Beard Foundation was established to continue his legacy, and the awards recognize outstanding achievements in the culinary arts. This week’s awards, in 38 categories, are the third annual presentations.
