“Through this prestigious award,” O’Connell said, “the James Beard Foundation acknowledges the efforts of our dedicated staff. The award also recognizes the importance of our growers and purveyors for the quality of ingredients and products which they provide us.

“Our gratitude extends to everyone who has worked with us over the past 15 years to bring The Inn at Little Washington to this level of excellence,” O’Connell added.

The Beard Award is but the latest in an ever-growing list of honors bestowed on The Inn over its 15-year history. It is one of just a handful of American restaurants and inns recognized by Relais et Chateaux, of France. It is a winner of Mobil Travel Guide’s Five Stars, and is the only establishment ever to receive AAA’s. Five Diamonds for. both its restaurant and overnight accomodations.

Two other nearby restaurants also were honored by the James Beard Foundation. Jean-Louis Palladin, chef-owner of JeanLouis at the Watergate in the “other” Washington, shared chef of the year honors with New York’s Larry Forgione, of An American Place.

And Marcel Desaulniers, chef-owner of The Trellis restaurant in Williamsburg, received the foundation's award for the year’s best desserts cookbook.
