He said the sludge can save the farmer between $40 and $80 per acre in fertilizer costs. There is no cost to the farmer for the sludge, he explained. Bio Gro gets its funds from the municipalities that pay to have the sludge removed.
He said sludge provides nitrogen, phosphorus and trace minerals, but is deficient in potash. He added that sludge can be used to raise the pH of the soil up to 6.8, and that the nitrogen needs of the crop or the pH will be the limiting factor in determining how much is used.
He said the application usually provides enough nitrogen for the initial crop and between one-fourth and one-third of the needs for the next two years.
Mr. Faha said that the Department of Environmental Quality handles applications for permits to spread sludge. He said that it requires monthly reporting by firms such as Bio Gro covering such items as where sludge is being spread, the source of the sludge, and information on the fields it is spread on.
