Professional cycling’s Tour DuPont gets rolling Thursday afternoon in Wilmington, Del., and wheels through Front Royal and Rappahannock County next Monday.
The ultimate finish line for the 1,085-mile event is in Greensboro, N.C. The winning cyclist — with'the lowest accumulated time for all 11 stages — will get $40,000 and a new Saturn automobile.
Total prize money: $200,000.
“This year’s Tour promises to be the best and most exciting to date,” said Michael Plant, executive director of the Tour DuPont and president of Richmond-based Medalist Sports Inc. “What makes this event unique, however, is the estimated two million spectators who’ll line the course.”
The 11-day race begins with an individual time trial. Monday’s Stage 5 is a 100-mile road race from downtown Front Royal to the Massanutten Resort.
Tour DuPont organizers describe the Stage 5 course as “the first serious challenge of the Tour,” with three testing climbs.
