Monday’s stage race begins at noon and should end about four hours later.
Among the best viewing areas along the route: Thornton Gap (leaders should roll through between 1:25 p.m. and 1:35 p.m.) and Sperryville (1:45-1:56 p.m.).
Sperryville will feature one of 24 sprint lines in the event. The top six riders through a designated point on the course are given points towards the Sprint Leader award. One of the top U.S. cyclists, Davis Phinney, won the Sprint Leader competition in 1991.
With defending champion Greg LeMond opting to prepare for the Tour de France, the race favorite appears to be Raul Alcala, a native of Mexico who’s ranked No. 11 in the world. He won the race in 1990, when it was known as the Tour de Trump, and is considered among the sport’s best climbers.
That’s a skill that will come in handy in Stage 5, which includes three serious climbs of 2,000 feet or more — at Thornton Gap, Swift Run Gap and up to the finish line at Massanutten, located in the mountains outside of Harrisonburg.
