County Administrator John McCarthy asked the supervisors if they wanted to join Fauquier County in urging the Department of Environmental Quality to hold a public hearing on whether or not to designate portions of the Rappahannock River for Tier III status. Fauquier County had adopted a resolution urging a public hearing to get information without either supporting or opposing Tier III status for the river.
Piedmont Environmental Council president Robert Dennis said that most of the county’s streams drain through the Hazel River into a section of the river not recommended for Tier III status. He said Tier III status might affect Chester Gap and Flint Hill, but neither of those communities would be suitable for a sewage treatment plant anyway.
He said Virginia is required by federal law to consider whether any of the state’s streams or rivers are sufficiently clean to qualify for Tier III status, but that the state does not have to approve any Tier III streams. He urged the county to join Fauquier in supporting the public hearing.
The supervisors decided to take a “wait and see” attitude toward the issue, but to send a letter saying they are concerned about the effect Tier III status might have on the county.
