Again soccer and track have provided the good news for high school sports in the past week.
The soccer team won its second game 2 to 1 Friday at Madison. Both of Rappahannock’s goals were made fairly early in the first period. Jonathan Maeyer and Oliver Crump got those early goals, and the first half ended with Rappahannock ahead 2 to .0. About half way through the second half Madison got its only goal.
Following the game, coach Uli Maeyer said the Rappahannock squad had four chances to score in the first half and got goals out of two of them. “After that it became a defensive battle,” he said. He said Madison’s one goal occurred when goalie Kevin Joliffe was unable to see through the crowd of defenders. 'T told them to leave it open so the goalie can see the guy that shoots,” he said. “We’ll have to work on that in practice.” He said extra running in practice had improved his team’s physical condition.
Earlier in the week the team had lost 1 to 0 in a game with William Monroe in Stanardsville. Coach Maeyer said he felt his team played very well in that game but lost anyway. “That’s the way it goes sometimes,” he said. “Our play is coming together.” The soccer team will play a home game against Randolph Macon Academy on Thursday.
