He said his department is primarily responsible to see that sludge application does not create problems for surface water or groundwater. -

Spot checks are made to ensure that permit requirements are being met, he said.

Mr. Egbom said when a permit is issued, the rules are clearly stated on it, Sludge must be kept a safe distance from streams, wells, and neighboring properties. He said his department would hold an informational meeting before allowing sludge application in Rappahannock County. “The criteria were developed to make the land application of sludge very safe,” he said. “There are no documented cases of problems with contamination of streams or groundwater.”
