The Board of Supervisors approved a $8.6 million county budget for the fiscal year starting July 1 in a special meeting Monday night. The supervisors cut $26,701 from the budget and passed it with tax. rates of 62 cents per hundred for real estate and $2.90 for personal property.
The cuts approved were $1,200 from the Board of Supervisors, $2,701 from the County Administrator’s office, $17,500 from the Planning Commission and $5,000 from contributions to other agencies such as Legal Aid.
The 62 cent rate for real estate represents a 24 percent increase over the current 50 cent rate. The rate for personal property is unchanged.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie had hoped to cut enough to reduce the tax rate to 61 cents, but other supervisors did not approve his suggestion to eliminate health insurance for supervisors and travel funds and funds for dues and subscriptions for the board.
Mr. Massie suggested CountyAdministrator John McCarthy’s administrative secretary receive the same raise as other county and state employees. The supervisors compromised on that issue giving her $2,000 less than Mr. McCarthy had asked for.
