Theme of Fair
The Piedmont Environmental Council will host its second annual Family Fair from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Monday, July 5, at the Airlie Conference Center, Warrenton.
The fair will offer a new series of programs focussing on environmental issues. It includes award winning nature films and guests speakers on different issues ranging from historic preservation to Virginia’s endangered wildlife, from ozone to the rain forest and the Shenandoah National Park. Events will include a petting zoo of exotic and domestic animals, draft horse and mule rides, face painting, two puppet shows, a fencing demonstration, sheep dog demonstrations, vintage cars and the PEC student environmental art contest.
Of special interest will be an exhibit of vintage airplanes, including a rare, fully restored, awardwinning 1918 Curtis Jenny, recently featured in a National Geographic special. Beside the Curtis Model JN4-D, there will be an OT W Myers WWII Trainer bi-plane, a Super Piper Cub from the 1950s, a 1933 Aeronca C III open cockpit sport plane, a Fairchild PT19 WWII trainer and a 1947 Luscomb sedan.
A talk, demonstration, and film will show how an ultra light aircraft is used to guide migrating Canada geese from Airlie to Canada and back.
There will be music all day by strolling musican Ray Owen, and the Southfork Bluegrass Boys. Admission is $6 per car which includes one free raffle ticket. i
