without statistics for Rappahannock. Most measurements are in the form of percentages, and if the number of students being measured is 10 or fewer, the state does not report »the results. Several measurements of minority student achievements were not reported for Rappahannock students because fewer than 10 students belonged to the group being measured.
The OAP measures schools for seven objectives: Preparing Students for College, Preparing Students for Work, Increasing the Graduation Rate, Increasing Special Education Students’ Living Skills ; and Opportunities, Educating Elementary School Students, Educating Middle School Students, and Educating Secondary Students. In addition the state provided statistics for each school division on various measurements of the community (see related article).
In measurements of preparing students for college, Rappahannock scored above the state average and surrounding communities in the percentage of graduates earning the Advanced Studies Diploma (46), the percentage of 8th grade students taking Algebra I (24), and the percentage of 8th grade students with a composite score on national standardized tests in the top 25 percent (39).
Rappahannock students were above the state average and all surrounding counties except Warren in the percentage studying a foreign language before 9th grade (36). The introduction of Spanish at the elementary school several years ago was finally reflected in this statistic Jast year as the first group of students learning Spanish moved up to the high school.
Rappahannock students did not measure very high in the percentage of 11th and 12th grade students taking at least one advanced placement or college level class, the percentage taking advanced placement tests Who scored three or higher or the percentage of 11th grade students with a composite score on national standardized tests in the top 25 percent.
For the state as a whole 20 percent of 11th and 12th graders take at least one Advanced Placement class. For Rappahannock County in 199192 that figure was 11 percent. Thirty-nine percent of state students who take Advanced Placement tests scored three or higher. For - Rappahannock that figure was 21 percent. Also 39 percent of state 11th graders scored in the top 25 percent on the standardized test, while only 29 percent of Rappahannock students scored that high. " For the past several years the .only advanced placement class open to Rappahannock students has been 'senior AP English. In addition a few ,,of the students studying calculus in 12th grade have taken Advanced Placement tests. Starting next year an 11th grade American History i class will be offered for Advanced !
