An Invitation:
It is the 32nd consecutive year since the Carrigans have invited the people of Rappahannock County to celebrate the Declaration of Independence on the hills of Avon Hall in Washington, Va.
I am glad to extend this invitation again this year because the Town of Washington is sponsoring a wonderful fire works display at the lake, and also because our country for 217 years has maintained freedom from domination by a foreign power. This freedom is so precious in the world today that we need to keep constant vigilance to preserve it from all forces.
This celebration is a reminder that the founding fathers were right when Benjamin Franklin announced that “We have a Republic as long as you can keep it.”
217 years ago the Continental Congress feared that if they did not write in sufficient protection they might go the way of most past republics. Benjamin Franklin warned against how7 most governments, when unable to settle disagreements peacefully, left decisions to “chance, war, and conquest.”
How7 right he was. We have fought many w ars in 217 years, including three of the worst wars known to man.
A w7ord about safety. Personal fireworks of any kind are^forbidden on the grounds of Avon Hall. There will be a police patrol, and fireworks illegally brought onto the grounds can be confiscated. We have had 31 years without an accident - let us continue the record.
