There was little discussion on the decision not to fund contributions to Legal Aid and other social service agencies. The supervisors have over the years always cut these funds from the budget.
“A year when you are raising taxes is not a good year to look for ways to spend money," Mr. M£ssie said.
Mr. Massie suggested that Mr. McCarthy’s secretary should not receive a salary higher than the Deputy Treasurer or Deputy Commissioner of Revenue. Those salaries are set by the state. “It’s a personnel issue, not a personal issue,” Mr. Massie said. “My fear is that if we get one position out of whack on the high side, we’ll be asked to supplement the others.”
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said that he had always received outstanding service from Mr. McCarthy’s assistant. He noted that most surrounding counties supplement state salaries, particularly for beginning deputies.
Mr. McCarthy said his secretary’s position is “different” from the positions of deputy treasurer or deputy commissioner of revenue.
Mr. Massie noted that supervisors are paid $1,200 per year while members of the fire and rescue squads volunteer for free.
