To the Editor:
How can you call the ban on recycling sludge “a victory for the environment?” It is just the opposite.
The notion of recycling lies at the . very core of environmental stewardship. While many by-products of human consumption are difficult to recycle, sludge is not one of them. The Japanese have eiyoyed the benefits of “night soil” on their fields for thousands of years. Yes, there are contaminants in modern sewage that must be guarded against; but current technology and existing regulations make such oversight easy to achieve. The dangers of chemical fertilizer runoff, on the other hand, are clear and present. We need only look dowhstream to the dying Chesapeake, whose waters have been robbed of oxygen by chemical fertilizers applied in, among other places, Rappahannock County.
Now our farmers are offering to take the sludge disposal problem off society’s hands and turn it into a wholesome, soil-building agricultural asset. What is our response? No, we dare not offend the tender nostrils of a few passing tourists - peo
