To the Editor:
As Baccalaureate approached a few weeks ago, I looked forward to the spiritual symbolism of the candlelight ceremony, and I looked forward to seeing my friends and their families. I also looked foreward to what I hoped would be a meaningful, appropriate, and inspirational speech by by former science teacher, Reverend Thomas Von Fange.
I was sorely disappointed. I felt the speech was severely inappropriate. I was deeply offended by it.
He began his speech with the statement that the ACLU was “the new four-letter word in (his) dictionary,” and that this organization was trying to suppress our first amendment rights.
I know the American Civil Liberties Union as an organization that works for fairness, equality and justice in our society.
I was offended by Rev. Von Fange’s reference to homosexuality as perversion, and by the implications that homosexuality and support of gay rights are wrong.
