To the Editor:

I am a bit confused - in the course of two public hearings the Virignia Department of Health, Water Control Board, Farmers Association and the public unaminously supported the use of sludge as fertilizer and then the Board of Supervisors voted against it? Just exactly who do they represent?

This vote certainly raises some unpleasant questions.

To Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Irwin - your tourists are also not going to like the smell of poultry, hogs, cattle, horses, kennels. Most visitors do not know one from another, do you want them all gone too? Secondly, your business interests do not outweigh mine or farmings’.

Last week’s editorial smacks of irresponsible joumalisn as all the research to date has shown sludge to be safe. Those of us attending the hearings had done our homework, did you?

Again I ask the Board, who are you representing? Something stinks in this county - but its not sludge! JENNIFER L. ALEXANDER
