Trash Deal

The Board of Supervisors backed away from the agreement to haul county trash to Fauquier without taking any vote on the matter at Monday’s meeting.
Also the supervisors voted to advertise for new contracts to operate the landfill and collect county trash for nine months. The current contract with Updike Industries for both landfill operation and trash collection expires October 1.
County Administrator John McCarthy said he had read a report that two of the members of the Fauquier Board of Supervisors wanted to get out of the agreement, which had been approved unanimously two weeks earlier. The other three board members did not agree, Mr. McCarthy reported.
Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham, who runs Fauquier County’s landfill, said however, he believes the Fauquier supervisors will try to increase the tipping fees for Rappahannock trash. The agreement said that Rappahannock’s fees would be 5* percent higher than those charged Fauquier users at the beginning, but did not specify that the difference could hot be made greater.
Chairman Hubert Gilkey not&I that a lot of time anti effort has been spent trying to work out agreements with other counties, first with Page and Warren counties and later with Fauquier. “I think we ought to go to Amissville and do our thing and let these other counties do their thing,” he said. “We’re back to square one.”
