Hear Ye! Hear Ye! All “hiverriots” (veteran boatmen) and “pilgrims” (beginning boatmen) put those poles to the bottom and lift those sweeps and given the Boatman’s Yell: “WHOOAH!”
For one day this summer, residents and visitors to Front Royal will get a glimpse of what river life Vtfls like almost 200 years ago. The J^mes River Batteau Re-enactors will set up camp August 7 at the Shenandoah Riverfest ’93, offering festival goers a chance to relive the batteau days when the long slender boats were used by merchants to ferry tobacco, flour, pig iron and other items down the James River to ikrints east of Lynchburg.
The primitive encampent features families playing the parts of otir ancestors with the river and the camp as the stage. Included are period tents, batteau costumes, period cyoking and eating utensils, cooking oyer an open fire with iron pots and food that batteaumen would have eaten.
Batteau rides will be given. RidJers are encouraged to ask question ■about the batteau and the camp as Iwell as grabbing a pole and given it a .try. [ Shenandoah Riverfest ’93 promts to be great family fun. In addition to the James River Battear Reenactment, there will be canoe races fo{ the experienced and the novice, JauJrageous water rodeo events that wifi offer fun for both participants and spectators, hands-on demonstrations by area wildlife and environmental groups, antiques and (crafts, a kids’ corner, live bluegrass ■music performed by HARMONY HOLLOW, OPEN WINDOW and IWHYSKEY CREEK, and lots of food.
