lawn, toys all over the yard, and one or more licensed cars in the yard.)

But usually they pack up and move on with a minimum of resistance and argument.

Occasionally there is resistance. “How can you embarrass me in front of the children?” asked one family man. “It’s easy,” Uncle Fred said. “You’re on private property. Would you like to move on now, or do you want to wait for the sheriff?” The family man considered his face-saving options, packed up, and moved on.

“I’m a taxpayer!” said another, indignantly. “So am I,” said Uncle Fred, smiling broadly. “I’m always glad to meet a fellow taxpayer. Please get off my property,” The fellow taxpayer gathered up his picnic cooler and left.

One man was particulary hard to convince. Uncle Fred was about to signal Aunt Suzanne to go in the house and call the sheriff, when he asked the man where he lived.

“Sliver Springs, Maryland,” he snarled. “Why do you ask?” he added belligerently.

“Well,” said Uncle Fred, “we need a place to picnic next week. I thought we’d try your yard.”

The man glared at the group. He opened his mouth several times, but no words came out. Slowly he packed up and left.

One night about 3 a.m. when the full moon was as bright as a searchlight, Earl looked out the window to see what looked like a mirror shining back at him. When he squinted against the glare, he saw somebody in a sleeping bag. But what was that brilliant glare?

He woke Joy, and the two of them tip-toed into the brightness. For safety and defense they brought a pie pan to bang on for noise, and a stick to use in case they became desperate.

Sure enough, there was a sleeping bag, and somebody was in it. And the glare was coming from the end of the bag.

They looked again. The glare was a bald head! Earl stared indignantly at the sleeping trespasser and started to bang on the pie pan.

The man sat up in the sleeping bag with a start, and climbed out. Not only was his head bare, but so was the rest of him! Earl screamed and Joy ran into the house to wake up Uncle Fred.

Uncle Fred came out. After a short discussion the camper put on some clothes. Uncle Fred and the camper continued the discussion. After a longer discussion the camper soon drove off into the moonlight.
