Such an overbiown article by one of the major purveyors of the news to Virginians makes one wonder if the media will listen to those who think it T should be more responsible in its performance.
Just a few weeks ago, for example, I noted that respected state political observer Dr. Mark Rozell • « had written a piece expressing hope “the press coverage of this campaign will be focused more on the im- ” portant, though sometimes dull, policy issues that are of significance to the Commonwealth than on cer- •» tain emotion-laden, controversial issues.”
That’s certainly a good idea, but not one the Post is likely to take to heart. The Post is one of few newspapers with a full-time media reporter, one who has been seen frequently on television in recent weeks promoting his latest book.
The problem is that the great majority of his V criticism is aimed at media elsewhere when he might find a few things worth criticizing in his own back yard if he’d just take a look.
One of them would certainly be the consistent superficial coverage by the Post of Virginia political "7 campaigns with emphasis often on the trivial at the .//; expense of the significant.
There is nobody running for statewide office in ' ' Virginia this year that I know of who condones dis- ‘ criminiation in any way, shape or form and the Post A„ knows it; but plays its little games anyway for the sake of sensationalism.
