Nil one showed up to oppose the 39 percent increase in sewer rates for the Sperryville treatment plant.
The three members of the Water and Sewer Authority (WSA) present quickly closed the public hearing on the rate increase last Thursday and voted to adopt the new rate of $21.50 per month for each Equivalent Dwelling Unit and the budget for the coming year.
Chairman Eugene Leggett said the increase was needed because of increased operating costs “due to more rigorous requirements by the state. If we don’t meet them, we’ll be fined. We don’t have any choices. I hope in future years requirements from the state will be more stable.”
