John Alexander continued, “Do we have an ordinance against the Co-op'spreading 5-10-5? Do we have an ordinance against orchard sprays? If we do, I can see the purpose, but why have an ordinance for or against sludge?”
Bob Dennis noted that most of the sludge comes from the Blue Plains treatment plant. “It has to go somewhere,” he said. “It’s not wise to dump it in the ocean or bum it. If we can make good agricultural use of the product by recycling it, it’s beneficial for those farmers who are fortunate enough to have soils and slopes that permit, the spreading of sludge. The county would have to have a solid argument to take that right away from the farmers who would qualify. ”
Mr. Dennis said he had been chairman of the county Water and Sewer Authority in the past. At one point the WSA did not know if it could find a place to dispose of the sludge from that plant he said. “It was dicey there for a while,” he added. “What would happen if other jurisdictions turn around and do the same thing as this county?”
