actors and a life-size cross was carried around the stadium by selected youth delegates. After the Stations, a message from the Pope was broadcast into the stadium. While the group was at this event they were able to give their gift, a T-shirt for the Pope, to a WYD staff member who would give it to someone who would present it to the Pope.
The highlights of the group’s WYD experience were the fifteen mile pilgrimage from downtown Denver to Cherry Creek State Park and the Papal mass on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The pilgrimage began with a special mass at the Civic Center and continued as 60,000 pilgrims hiked on a" bike path tow ards the park.
“We wrere very pleased with ourselves for getting front row7 seats at the pilgrimage mass and walking the entire fifteen miles, with heavy backpacks, and only getting a couple cases of blisters. The residents along the way kept our spirits up by cheering and waving, especially when we told them we came all the way from Virginia!”
At both events the thrill of being with so many people w as beyond the group’s description. They all began to feel the unity of our faith as they moved towards the end of the pilgrimage.
