In 1950, World War II had been over for more than five years. As the post-war economy boomed many veterans who had delayed marriages, careers and home buying for the duration were making up for lost time, and farmers and businessmen updated their old equipment as fast as their finances permitted.
Everybody wanted a new car or truck. There were plenty of car advertisements in the paper, but few of them quoted a price. But this one, from the February 9,1950 issue of the Rappabnnock News, shows that for only $1,395 you could drive home in this 1950 Dodge half-ton pickup.
A few weeks later a 1950 2-door Studcbaker Champion sedan was advertised for “now only” $1,553.17.
