Susan Babcock said that it would be “short sighted” to ban sludge leaving the county with no place to put its own sludge when it could help fanners remain in farming.
Lindsay Eastham said that the Rappahannock Farmers Association supports the option of using sludge. “We’ll never have a majority that wants it,” he said.
Roger Welch said that the problem is that most people are “uninformed. If we had more information, we could make a better decision and not deny the farmers in Rappahannock the choice of using it or not.”
Alvin Henry saht he was neither in favor not opposed to sludge. He said he has seen where it has been spread in Fauquier. “It gives lush vegetation and is of immediate economic benefit to the people who use it, but it does have a distinct odor.” He said that the spreaders use very large equipment that can be a problem on “narrow back roads.”
