Stop This Line
To the Editor:
Rappahannock Electric is porposing to erect a new power tranmission line from Sperryville through the heart of Fletchers Mill, Red Oak Mountain and Rock Mills to the Rixley substation near AmisSivlle. Those of us served by R.E.C. have contented with frequent and lengthy power outages and now, we are told, the building of this new high voltage line will solve our problems.
Well, I don’t think so. Rural landowners know - outages are caused primarily by falling limbs on distribution lines, not the huge towers carrying transmission voltage or by transformer failures within the substations. Rather than bulldoze a 100-to-200-foot right-of-way through Some of our county’s most scenic farms and residences, why not take advantage of the exsisting right of ways and upgrade what is already in place?
R.E.C. is facing increasing demands for service in Culpeper County where the majority of its cutomers live. Those of us in Rappahannock -should not be asked to see our lands and fields polluted by this proposed new line which will not solve our problems with R.E.C. R.E.C: has the existing right of ways and facilities to bring in the additional power it wants without cutting a swath through Rappahannock. It is time to draw the line to stop this line.
