J. D. Hartman, owner of High on the Hog, will be entering the Best Ribs Championship outside Winchester this Saturday and hopes many of his loyal local customers will come and help him win.
A $3 ticket lets you attend the contest, enjoy live music from three bands and entitles you to a ballot for the “People’s Choice” trophy for the best ribs. The day runs from 11 a. m. until 7 p.m. and is sponsored by the Winchester-Frederick County Jaycees.
The event will take place at the Westview Business Park two miles east of Winchester on Route 50. Mr.. Hartman said 10 restaurants will be participating in the contest, which also includes judges’ trophies'" for best ribs and best Bar-^-Q sandwich.
In 1989 he entered the Invitational World Rib Championship in Richmond and won second place for his sauce. That was a huge event that included entries from as far away as Australia and served over 100,000 people over four days. He plans on selling that sauce at this Saturday’s event. He will also be selling a basting sauce.
This weekend will be a more modest affair. Mr. Hartman said the Jaycees are expecting between 5,000
