Universal Health
Insurance The cutbacks at the Aileen plant in Flint Hill poignantly show the need for universal health insurance. Although the company has allowed the furloughed and reduced hours employees to continue their insurance, many simply can’t afford the payments. A choice between food and health insurance is no choice at all. We realize that there is no health insurance plan th^t is perfect and without problems, whether it is a private one or a government plan. But any plan is better than no plan at all. If you don’t believe it, just ask your unemployed neighbor.
Foreign Competition Maybe it would make no difference at all to Flint Hill workers and residents if the Aileen plant in the Dominican Republic were to close, and their work shifted to Aileen plants in the United States. We just don’t know. The basic salary in the Flint Hill plant is $4.75 an hour for many workers, hardly a living wage. Are salaries that much lower in the Dominican Republic? How much can a company save using foreign ldbor?
