Bad Choice
To the Editor. > - The Republicans in Virginia today find themselves in the same position as Democrats in California or New York have been in the past. A small focused minority has acquired a veto power over the nomination process, and the party has a ticket that is unpalatable to the mainstream of either the Republican party or the electorate at large. The charge to the right of this year’s ticket has resulted in rruqor defections from traditional Republican supporters. 1 Traditional Republicans have good reason to,reject this ticket. When you have a candidate who states that breast cancer is caused by abortions, or who has tried to get books such as The Wizard of Oz or The Diary of Ann Frank out of the schools, you have a ticket that deserves no creditability from voters of any orientation. If the Republican party is to escape the control of these forces, it must repudiate this ticket. That is not going to be easy for them, because it means that they will either have to support the 1'erry, Beyer, Dolan ticket statewide, and in Rappahannock County support Jerry Wood, or they Will let the far right control their party.
I urge Republicans to give the ticket of the Democratic Party a serious look. Look at the records of Mary Sue Terry, Don Beyer, Bill f)plan and Jerry Wood. They are serious candidates with proven records. I think you will find this ticket Closer to your values and ideals than the extremist far right ticket you have been given. The voting booth is private. No one will know. This may be your last chance to save your party. Those of you who left the Democratic Party because it once was too extreme for you, think about Coming home. You will find a welcome waiting for you.
