Mrs. Massie responded, “What we should do is put in what we think we need for the education of the children. If is cut, we see what will cause the least damage to the educational process.”
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative John Tole said he favored having a teacher for gifted students but wondered about adding that while employees that work with “at risk” students are being cut.
“It has been very successful,” he said. “It looke like it is all going away, which is tragic. I’m concerned that we remove one activity and add another.”
Dr. Gangel said that some of the personnel hired to serve “at risk” students will be continued, the social worker and another professional employee, but he admitted that some of the services provided under that program will be lost because the federal grant that funded it runs out at the end of September.
The board agreed to add the teacher for gifted children to the budget and take a second look at the matter after the General Assembly adjourns.
