At last week’s Town Council meeting, the council voted to ask Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke to investigate whether documents and writings distributed during the recent Town Council campaign violate state election laws.
Council member Ray Gooch, obviously distraught, brought up the issue which led to the decision to investigate. He said, “I do not think I was the only person disheartened in the last couple of months. There were anonymous mailings. I think we deserve better, and I feel the integrity of the government of this town has been seriously undermined.”
Mr. Gooch said that he contacted the office of the State Board of Elections in Richmond to discuss the situation. The Virginia Code says anyone distributing campaign material must identify who it is from, and Mr. Gooch said that the anonymous mailings did not give the name of the accuser.
