I bred heifer; $573 of net income.

5. Sell the open cow and don’t replace her; $495 of net income.

It is apparent that any alternate to having a cow producing a calf every year is a costly option. Alternative number three, moving the cow to another calving gorup, may work in larger herds. With that alternative only three-to-six months of income is lost. Replacing the open cow (alternative 4) also tends to maximize returns and, at the same time, results in a younger more productive cow at the end of the five year period.

These estimates may not reflect the actual net-income stream on your farm, but the herds will likely be the same. As profit margins begin to narrow over the next few years, this and other important management decision will help you remain competitive in the feeder cattle business.

A more thorough explanation of this open cow question should be available soon in the farm press.

I will be available to Rappahannock County farmers and landowners each Thursday morning during May and June. Please call the Rappahannock Extension Office for assistance and/or an appointment
