to historic places in Virginia with members and friends touring Tuckahoe Plantation, Scotchtown and the Church Quarter.
Tuckahoe Plantation was the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson, This is a working farm and lived-in home and is one of the few plantation houses not damaged in the Civil War, supposedly because the Yankee commander remembered dancing with the “lady-of-the-house” at a ball in New York City. Because of its antiquite, it was chosen as the asetting for the Williamsburg film “The Patriot.”
Another historic place visited was Scotchtown in Hanover County which was the residence of Patrick Henry from 1771-1777. An interesting sidelight of Scotchtown’s history was that Dolley Madison lived there for a few years when she was a child.
The third place visited was the Church Quarter, thought to be the oldest unaltered log cabin on the East Coast and now owned by the Scotchtown Chapter, NSDAR.
The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14 for a dutch treat luncheon at the Public House in Flint Hill. Flag Day will be celebrated with the speaker being Mrs. Richard C. Anderson, Chairman, The Flag of the U.S. of America Committee, VADAR.
