Of the 18 teams participating, two were from Rappahannock County. The two teams were the Gay St. Walkers (county employees and cancer society board members) and Libbie’s Ladies. Together the two teams raised $2,797 which will be returned to Rappahannock County to assist cancer patients and support the educational programs conducted by the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The first lap of the 24 hours Relay for Life was walked by cancer survivors. Mrs. Libbie Whorton and Ester Settle of Flint Hill, both cancer survivors, participated.
At 9 p.m. luminarias—donated in memory of loved ones who had cancer—were lit the entire length of the relay track. It was a very touching and emotional part of the program for many in the audience. I think most of us have known someone—a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor—who has died of cancer or is a cancer patient.
On behalf of the local American Cancer Society, I thank all of my coworkers in county government and cancer society members who walked, the ladies in Flint Hill who walked and all the people and businesses in Rappahannock County who donated and sponsored a walker. We appreciate it very much.
