At Monday night’s work session on the county budget discussion ranged over a wide variety of subjects, but the budget was left basically unchanged.
The Board of Supervisors reviewed the budgets of the constitutional officers, Commissioner of Revenue, Treasurer, Commonwealth’s Attorney and Sheriff, as well as the budgets of the jail, extension service, court clerks, fire and rescue services, Electoral Board and registrar.
The supervisors also looked at the budget for their own board and agreed that Chairman Hubert Gilkey and vice chairman Charles K. ‘Tete” Estes would negotiate with County Administrator John McCarthy on his new contract.
Home Economics Agent Helen Smith reported that conversations with the administration of the extension service indicate that the position of agricultural agent will be advertised in the fall, and it will probably be the first of January before the position is filled.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie said that since he had raised the issue, he had received overwhelming support for the extension office. He asked whether it makes sense to renegotiate a contract to continue renting the current space if the county has only one agent.
