At an afternoon reception on Saturday, May 14, Gov. Gerald L. Baliles received the eleventh annual Outstanding Virginians Award at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center.
The 1988 recipient, the Honorable John 0. Marsh Jr., and Mrs. John T. Hazel, Jr. (Jinx), Chairman of the Outstanding Virginian Award Committee were on hand to present the award.
This prestigious award was created by a joint resolution of The General Assembly to pay tribute to a citizen of Virginia who, by his or her education and outstanding leadership, has made a significant contribution to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Gov. Baliles, Governor of the Commonwealth between 1986 and 1990, intitated a comprehensive package of education reforms aimed at preparing students for work in the global economy, including enhanced geography and foreign language study. He proposed a tenyear infrastrucure plan to improve Virginia’s road, sea and air links with markets at home and abroad.
