More and more Rappahannock kids are becoming hooked on soccer.
The Rappahannock Soccer Association, which began six years ago, had over 160 registered players last fall.
In the first year, the local league started with 50 or 60 players, and it has steadily grown. One reason for this is the dedication and enthusiasm shown by many parents. Also, soccer is becoming more popular around the world. The World Cup soccer games will be played in the U.S. this year for the first time. FIFA, the Federation Internationale de Football Association, hopes that having the U.S. host the World Cup will generate more interest in soccer in this country.
Richard Price is the sole commissioner for the soccer league this year. He and Ann Kerr were in charge of it last year, and Vinnie Carney is the person who started the league. t
Mr. Price said, “A lot of the kids in the high school program now, got their start in the local soccer league.” Because of the early experience, he said, they really do well on the high school team.
The soccer league has many teams, put together according to age. The youngest is the U6 group (U stands for under). There is also U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16. Boys and girls comprise the teams, and usually parents are the coaches. Mr. Price is a parent and a certified referee.
Last fall, coach Ozzie Pace’s U10 i team scored 65 goals during the season and had only two goals scored against them. Most of the players
