Doris Critzer and Mary Updike, who ran unsuccessfully for seats on the Washington Town Council last May, received summonses last week to appear in court on September 20.
Both women have been charged with misdemeanors regarding violations of election laws. According to Major Ed Streapy of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office, they were charged with circulating sample ballots before the last Washington Town Council election which did not comply with the law set forth for such ballots, as stated in Virginia Code Sections 24.2-622 and 24.2-1014.
These code sections state that it is unlawful to print and circulate sample ballots which do not show who authorized them, and are printed on white paper (any other color is acceptable).
